Ettiquette of visiting the graveyard

PURPOSE OF VISTING THE GRAVES

The purpose of visiting the graves is to remember death, reflect on the hereafter, and pray for the deceased.

DO's

  • Dress Modestly: Wear respectful, modest clothing.
  • Show Respect: Walk on designated paths, avoid stepping on or sitting on graves.
  • Greet the Deceased:

“Assalamu ‘alaykum ahl al-diyar min al-muminin wa’l-Muslimin, wa inna in sha Allah bikum lahiqun, as alu Allaha lana wa lakum al-‘afiyah.”

[Peace be upon you O people of the dwellings, believers and Muslims, In sha Allah we will join you, I ask Allah to keep us and you safe and sound]

 

  • Pray for the Departed: Make du’a (supplication) for forgiveness and mercy for the deceased. You should face the direction of the Ka’bah when making du’a
  • Dress Modestly: Wear respectful, modest clothing.
  • Show Respect: Walk on designated paths, avoid stepping on or sitting on graves.
  • Be Quiet: Speak softly, avoid loud talking, shouting, or laughing, especially if a funeral is nearby.
  • Cleanliness: Keep the area tidy and don’t litter.
  • Supervise Children: Ensure kids behave respectfully

DON'Ts

  • No Worldly Talk: Avoid discussing worldly matters; focus on remembrance.
  • No Disrespect: Do not sit on, lean on, or step on graves.
  • No Excessive Grief: Avoid hysterical wailing or lamenting.
  • No Asking the Dead: Do not call upon the deceased for help or ask them to intercede with God.
  • No Idolatry: Don’t worship the dead or treat graves as holy sites for worship.
  • No Unauthorized Activities: Avoid smoking, eating, drinking, or distributing food.
  • No Disturbance: Be mindful of others, especially during funerals.
